How to Build a Swinging Gate

If you are going to have a swinging gate, the height should be around 7′. If you will be building a walk through gate then the height can be as low as 5′.
The next thing you need to decide is what type of wood to use. Most people choose cedar since it is rot resistant and has a nice look to it. You can also use pressure treated pine if you want something that will last a little longer but isn’t quite as attractive as cedar.
If you are going to build a walk through gate then make sure your posts are at least 4″x4″. For swinging gates, try using 4″x6″ posts or 6″x6″ posts if possible because they will hold up better over time than smaller diameter posts will.

First of all, you need to make your frame. You want to take 2×4’s and make sure they’re at least 4 feet tall so you can get over it with ease. And then I would say about 8 feet long, maybe 10 for good measure. And then the width is whatever fits in your yard or whatever looks good for your house.
