Oracle SQL Developer is an Oracle database development, administration, and maintenance tool that provides a graphical user interface (GUI) for SQL statements.
The tool is a standalone executable that can be downloaded from Oracle’s website. It is also included in the Oracle Developer Suite and the Oracle Data Access Suite.
Oracle SQL Developer provides a GUI for performing administrative tasks such as creating tables and indexes, managing data, monitoring transactions, and analyzing performance. It also provides a GUI for writing Transact-SQL code using PL/SQL or Java stored procedures.
In addition to the features included in the core product, Oracle offers additional tools that can be added to the software:
The Oracle Database Migration Toolkit helps you move your data from one database to another by providing migration scripts.
Sample Database For Oracle SQL Developer
Oracle by Example 19c is a free sample database that you can use to try out Oracle SQL Developer. The database contains tables that represent the data in a personnel department of an organization. There are also sample views and procedures that demonstrate some of the built-in functions and procedures available with SQL Developer.
The following sections describe the contents of Oracle by Example 19c:
Schema Script with Data (oracle_by_example19c.sql) – This script creates all the tables, indexes, constraints, and so on in this sample database. You can execute this script if you have already installed Oracle SQL Developer on your computer. If you have not installed SQL Developer yet, see Installing Oracle SQL Developer for instructions on installing it from the Oracle Technology Network (OTN). If you do not want to install SQL Developer at this time but would like to view or modify the schema or data for this sample database, see Using Schema Diagrams to View Tables and Views for information about viewing tables using schema diagrams.
Database Creation Script (create_your_own_db_from_scratch.sql) – This script creates an empty database named “YourDBName” that is based on

Oracle By Example, 19c: Querying the HR Schema.
To illustrate some of the concepts we’ve discussed so far, I’ve written a script that queries the HR schema and returns some basic information about employees.
Create Database in Oracle SQL Developer
The first step is to create a new database in SQL Developer. If you don’t have SQL Developer installed on your computer, download it from Oracle’s website and install it. You can then launch SQL Developer and connect to your database as needed. When you open SQL Developer for the first time, it will ask for permission to access files on your computer, which will allow it to run scripts from within its window.
If you have not yet created an HR schema, please follow these instructions:
select * from employees;
select * from departments;
select * from payrolls;
select * from salaries;
SELECT * FROM DEPARTMENTS;
DEPARTMENT_ID DNAME LOCATION_ID MANAGER_ID OPENING_DATE CLOSING_DATE PHONE SALARY_CATEGORY SALARY MANAGER_DETAILS DEPARTMENTAL_GROUP 1 1001 New Delhi Delhi 0 23-FEB-11 23-FEB-11 999999999999 1000 – 23000 2 1002 Mumbai Mumbai 0 12-DEC-11 12-DEC-11 999999999999 1000 – 23000 3 1003 Kolkata Kolkata 0 19-JAN-12 19-JAN-12 999999999999 1000 – 2200 4 1004 London London 0 07-MAR-12 07-MAR-12 999999999999 1000 – 2200 5 1005 Bangalore Bangalore 0 10-MAR-12 10/MAR/2012 999999999999 1000 – 1800 6 1006 Pune Pune 0 21/APRIL/2012 21/APRIL/2012 999999999999 1000 – 1500 7 1007
A few years ago, I wrote a post on how to get started with Oracle. It was one of my most popular articles and is still being read today.
In this post, I want to follow up on that article by showing you how to use the sample database that comes with your Oracle installation.
Oracle has provided sample databases for many years. They are useful for learning SQL and PL/SQL because they contain real-world data that you can explore and experiment with.

SQL is a programming language for managing data in databases. SQL stands for Structured Query Language. It is the standard language for accessing and manipulating data stored in relational database management systems (RDBMS).
In this tutorial we will learn how to use SQL to access Oracle database.
SQL is a programming language which is used to access and manipulate data stored in an RDBMS. SQL stands for Structured Query Language.
The syntax of SQL statements is very similar to that of other computer languages, such as C and Java, but this resemblance is superficial; SQL has its own set of rules that must be followed to ensure that queries are properly structured and executed correctly by the database server.
