A shed is a common building for storing tools, equipment and other items. If you have limited space, or just need a place to store your gardening tools, you can build your own shed in a weekend or less.

The first step is to determine what size shed you need. The simplest way to do this is to measure the length of your longest tool, such as a shovel or rake, and multiply by two. The result will be the length of your shed’s floor plan. For example, if your longest tool measures 36 inches (91 cm), then you’ll need a 48-inch-by-48-inch (122 cm x 122 cm) floor plan for your shed.

If you’re unsure how much space you’ll need in the future or want to make sure a particular item will fit inside, take measurements while it’s outside in its normal storage spot and add 10 percent to the total width and depth measurements.
