How to build box
Box columns or posts are commonly used on porches, decks and other outdoor structures. They are built from 2x4s and provide support for roof framing members such as rafters or trusses. The box column is built by attaching a box with the outside dimensions of 4×4 inches (100 mm x 100 mm) to an existing post or beam. You can use either pressure-treated lumber or dimension lumber to build a box column.
Step 1: Measure and mark the location of your post. The top edge of the box should be level with the top of your post, but not higher than 6 inches above it if you’re using pressure-treated lumber.
Step 2: Use a circular saw to cut off the top 5 inches of your post at an angle so that it can fit into the opening in your new box column (see Resources). This will allow you to align the bottom edge of your new porch post with its original position without having to remove any additional material from it.
Step 3: Cut two pieces of pressure-treated lumber about 12 inches long (300 mm) for each side panel. These will be attached inside your new porch column as backing boards for attaching your new post
“How to build a box column to cover a post”

Start by measuring the distance between the posts, and then subtract 1/2 inch from that measurement. Take this measurement and cut two 2x6s that length.
