Gates are a necessity with any type of fence, but they are especially important if you have a split rail fence. Split rail fences are made up of individual pieces of wood that run horizontally along the top of the fence. There are no vertical boards in this style of fencing. Instead, each piece of wood is carved into two pieces with a gap between them. This gap allows people and animals to pass through the fence easily, but it also leaves gaps that need to be filled.

The simplest way to fill these gaps is with gates that allow access from one side of the fence to another. You can build gates out of various materials, including wood or metal, but this article focuses on wooden gates specifically. You can use any type of wood for your gate posts, but common choices include cedar, pine and redwood because they are inexpensive and easy to work with. You can also use pressure-treated lumber if you want something stronger and more durable than normal softwoods like pine or redwood.

Although not required by law in most places, it is recommended that you install gates with hardware that locks automatically when closed so that no one can accidentally leave them open or

How to Build a Wooden Gate for a Split Rail Fence

If you have a split rail fence, it’s easy to make a wooden gate that fits the style and matches the rest of your fence. All you need is some lumber, nails and hinges.

Step 1: Measure the opening where you want to place your gate. Measure from one side of the opening to the other, including the thickness of the post that will hold up your gate.

Step 2: Cut two pieces of 2-by-4 lumber to this measurement. These will be your bottom rails. Cut them as long as possible — at least 4 inches longer than the width of your opening — because you’ll need to cut them down later on when installing them into place.

Step 3: Cut two more pieces of 2-by-4 lumber for each side of your gate at least 48 inches long (or as long as possible). These will be your top rails, so cut them slightly shorter than your desired height for ease of handling during installation.

Step 4: Lay all four boards on their sides so they form an “H” shape with one leg being the height you want for your gate and the other leg being long enough to reach across both sides of your opening (with room

Step 1: Determine the size of your gate. The easiest way to do this is by measuring the opening between the rails. If you are using two rails, subtract 1/2 inch from each side of your opening. If you are using three rails, subtract 1 inch from each side.

Step 2: Cut your boards to length. For two rail gates, cut the horizontal pieces to 96 inches long and the vertical posts to 96 inches long. For three rail gates, cut all pieces to 96 inches long (or whatever length you determined in step one).

Step 3: Attach the horizontal pieces along both sides of your opening, leaving about 1/4 inch overhang on both sides and at each end of each board (see diagram below). Attach with 2″ deck screws or other large wood screws

Step 4: Add additional horizontal boards on top of these if needed for strength (this is called “scaffolding”). The extra boards will help support an upper rail if desired later on

Step 5: Attach vertical posts at each end of this structure with more 2″ deck screws or other large wood screwsHow to: Building a Wooden Gate | HGTV

This is the most basic, but very strong and effective way to build a wooden gate for your fence. It takes some work, but it’s not too hard at all.

Building this style of gate requires two posts that are approximately 6 inches in diameter. They should be buried approximately 4 feet deep with plenty of concrete around the base to keep them from moving. We used 6×6 cedar posts that we cut down to size in half with a chainsaw and then placed them in concrete with a quikrete mix.

The top rails are 3 1/2″ x 6 1/2″ cedar boards that we stained before applying them to the gate. The cross pieces are 2″ x 6″ cedar boards and they have been painted black using an oil based weather proofing paint called “Deck Guard”. This paint can be purchased from Lowe’s or Home Depot stores for about $8 per can, but I found it cheaper on Amazon Prime for about $5 per can (I had prime membership).

You will also need some galvanized nails for attaching the cross pieces onto the top rails, as well as some screws or nails for attaching the latch mechanism
