How to build a wood exterior door

Before you build an exterior door, it’s important to understand the basic anatomy of the door and how it works. The most common type of exterior door is a prehung door, which uses a jamb (the frame) and casing (the trim). A prehung door is installed in a frame that has already been installed in its opening. The jamb is built around the opening and then attached to the house.

The casing is made up of two pieces: an outer piece called an architrave (sometimes called an ovolo), and an inner piece called a reveal. The architrave covers the gap between the jambs and stops at the top jamb; it also covers any gaps between siding boards on the outside of your home. The reveal covers any gaps between siding boards on the inside of your home, as well as completing the look of your entryway.

How to Build a Wood Exterior Door

4) Screw or nail through pre-drilled holes into the center stile (the vertical piece) at both ends of every hanger leaf (the curved piece that holds up each side of your door).
