This guide describes how to build a basic box frame and how to build a sturdy box frame out of wood. It is not a difficult task if you are familiar, with basic woodworking principles, woodworking power tools and have the right tools for the job.

How to build a strong wooden box frame

1. Find two pieces of wood that are about 2 feet long, 1 foot wide and 8 inches high. They should be roughly the same width so that they fit together nicely. The height doesn’t matter as much, but it should be at least as high as your mattress or bed frame so that there’s enough room for you to move around inside it. You will also need some nails or screws to hold it together
2. Place the two pieces of wood together with their bottom edges touching each other and their top edges facing outward (this will form a cross shape). Nail or screw them together on all sides except for one side where you’ll leave one edge open for access

Build a Basic Box Frame
Step 1: Cut the Frame Pieces
Cut four pieces of 2×4 lumber to length and width according to your design plan. The length should be twice that of the width so that there are two vertical supports at each end.
Step 2: Mark and Drill Holes
Mark holes on each end of each piece using an awl or drill bit (see picture). Place a 1/2″ drill bit on the awl’s tip to make a hole large enough for 1/2″ screws. Drill all holes with this tip in order to create holes that are uniformly sized and spaced apart from each other.

You can use either type of saw for this step, but I recommend using a jigsaw because it will give you a cleaner cut than an electric saw and less dust from cutting wood. A jigsaw is also easier to hold steady when working on small projects like this one. If you don’t have access to either tool, ask around at local hardware stores or friends who might have them handy for this project.
If you’re using plywood, make sure that all four sides are identical in length so they fit together perfectly when assembled later on in Step 4!
