Planter boxes come in all shapes and sizes, so there are many options available when it comes to picking out the right one for your needs. You will need to decide how big you want your planter box to be before getting started with this project. If this is going on an existing deck, then measure the length and width of that area so that you can choose a size that fits well in that spot. If you are building an entirely new deck specifically for this purpose (which is recommended), then make sure that you consider its size as well.

Here’s the plan: I’m going to show you how to build a deck planter box. This will be a large, robust planter box that can be used for many years in your backyard. It will be able to withstand the elements and provide an attractive place for many different types of plants.

First, let’s take a look at some of the materials you’ll need:

1x12s or 2x12s – The size of these boards depends on how large you want your planter box to be. If you want it larger than the ones we built, just use two pieces instead of one. You can also use pressure treated boards if they are available in your area (or any other type of hardwood).

Shrink wrap or plastic sheeting – You’ll want something that will help keep moisture out of the wood and keep it from rotting over time. We used shrink wrap, but plastic sheeting (found at any hardware store) would work just as well if not better because it has a thicker gauge than shrink wrap.

Modular deck blocks – These come in different thicknesses so make sure you get ones that match up with what size boards you’re using.

Cut boards for the bottom of your planter box. We used 3/4″ pine boards for this project, but any type of wood will work (paint grade or construction grade). The length of the boards depends on how big you want your planter box and how many boards you have to work with. If you want multiple sections for different plants, cut each section separately so that each section can be accessed from below without having to lift up all of the other sections first (this will help if you have children or pets who are always digging in your yard).

Make sure that all of your boards are cut 2″ longer than each edge of the pallet, so that they can be nailed onto it later on.

To make sure our boards were straight, we lined up all of our boards together and used a level across them all at once so that they would be even before nailing them down onto our pallets.

Step 1: Cut the pallets

First, cut the pallets into 2×4-foot sections. You will need to have 2 or 3 of these sections to form a box that is as long and wide as you want your planter to be. For a large planter box, use three sections of pallets.

Step 2: Assemble the pallets

Once you have your sections cut, use wood glue and nails to assemble the pallets into a rectangular box. This can be done with either nails or screws; the choice is yours. The important thing is that the joints are strong enough so they will not come apart while holding soil in place.

In this project, we will show you how to build a planter box from pallets. This is a great project for a beginner who wants to learn how to build something simple and inexpensive.

If you have some pallet wood around your house that is just sitting there, why not make it into something useful? Pallets are free, so why not put them to good use? They are usually made out of hardwoods (like oak or maple), which makes them perfect for building with. Plus, they are already finished on one side so all you have to do is cut them down and sand them down.
