1. Measure and cut the lumber for the track pieces. Use a circular saw or table saw to cut 2x4s into 4-foot lengths for the track beams. Cut 2x4s into 2-foot lengths for support braces, if desired (optional). Cut 2x4s into 1 1/2-inch strips for handrails, if desired (optional). Cut 1×3 boards into 3 1/2-inch lengths to use as cross supports between beams (optional).
2. Assemble the track beams and braces by screwing them together on edge with deck screws or heavy-duty construction screws (see Resources). If you want to add a third rail to keep children from falling off the coaster, use a 2×4 with a notch cut out of one side as a cross beam between two other pieces of wood to create an X shape (see Photo 5).
