How to Build a Mailbox Out of Stone
A stone mailbox can be a great addition to your home, and it’s a relatively simple project for the DIYer. You’ll need some basic tools and materials like concrete, mortar, sand and gravel. For this project we used pre-cast concrete blocks from Home Depot that were about 18″ x 6″ x 6″. They’re called “chips” and they come in several different colors including gray, red, brown and blue. The chips make it easy to build up the sides of your mailbox so you don’t have to worry about measuring or cutting any pieces.
The first step is to build up the sides of your mailbox with chips so they’re 4″ – 5″ high. Then use mortar between each chip to hold them together while they dry overnight (this will take 24 hours). After 24 hours you’ll want to sand down any rough edges on your stone using 100 grit sandpaper or an orbital sander if possible so that everything is smooth and even with no sharp edges sticking out anywhere
