The Palace was built in 1624 by Louis XIII of France and Marie de Medici. It was later given to King Louis XIV and became his main residence. In order to protect it from destruction during World War II, it was occupied by Nazi Germany’s forces in 1940 during World War II at which time most of its interior decoration was plundered or destroyed; only a few rooms have been restored to their original appearance.[2]
