Shopify is one of the most popular eCommerce platforms that helps you build your own store. You can choose from hundreds of themes to customize your store and add features like payment integrations, shipping options and more.
Shopify has been in business for 17 years and has a ton of success stories under its belt.
In this article we’ll show you how to set up a Shopify site on your own domain name (URL).
If you want more control over your site, or if you want to move away from Shopify’s templates, then Shopify may not be the best choice for you.
Shopify With My Own Domain

Step 2: Click on Store settings and then choose General.
Step 3: Scroll down to the Domain section of your store settings and enter the domain name you want to redirect (e.g., www.domainname.com) in the “Custom domain” field.
Step 4: Click Save at the bottom of the page, then click Continue on the next screen and click Save again.
I’m looking to redirect my domain to Shopify, but I want to keep my website with a different hosting company.
Is there a way to do this without getting the domains from Shopify?
I’m using a GoDaddy hosting account for my website and I want to add it to my Shopify store. If I get my domain from Shopify, will that affect anything else? If so, how would I be able to redirect the domain?
I have a godaddy domain name and i want to use it with shopify but i don’t know how
Shopify is a great platform for building your online store, but it doesn’t come with the ability to host your domain. This means you’ll need to tell Shopify about your domain and set up redirection, so that visitors can find you on the web.
How to Redirect Your Domain to Shopify
To redirect your domain, follow these steps:
Log into your Shopify admin and click Settings > Domains & URLs in the left navigation bar.
Click Add new domain name.
Enter the name of your domain without www (for example, example.com). Click Next.
On the next page, enter all of the DNS records for your new domain name. You can use this guide from Shopify for help with DNS records. Click Save when done entering all of the DNS records for your new domain name (you may need to wait up to 48 hours for everything to go through).
To redirect a domain to your Shopify store, you’ll need to first set up a CNAME record.
A CNAME record is a type of DNS record that lets you create custom URLs for your domain. You can use this to point any subdomain on your domain to any website. In this case, we’ll be using the CNAME to point our custom domain (e.g., example.com) to our Shopify store (e.g., www.example.myshopifystore.com).
You can use the following steps to add CNAME records to your DNS settings:
Log into your GoDaddy account and click on “More Services” in the top navigation bar. From there, select “DNS Management.” Click on “Add Record” at the top of the page and enter the following information: Field name: www (or whatever subdomain you want)
In the Value field: Enter your Shopify URL without http://www or https:// (for example, if your site is https://www.exampleidunnoyet.myshopifystore/checkout then enter https://exampleidunnoyet).
Click Add Record at bottom of page
Shopify stores have a unique URL that is different from your domain name. For example, if you own the domain example.com and have a Shopify store, the store will be accessible on https://example.myshopify.com/
When you create an online store with Shopify, you’ll need to sign up for a free account and choose a plan. You can also add apps and additional features to your account later on as needed.
You can connect your Shopify store with Google My Business by following these steps:
Log in to your Google My Business account at https://business.google.com/. Click the blue Add Your Business button at the top right of any page within your Google My Business dashboard. Select “Add a physical location” from the drop-down menu and then click Continue. Select “Add a new location” from the drop-down menu, enter your address information and click Continue again when done. Enter your business name into the first field, choose which category best fits your business (e.g., Clothing Store) in the second field and then click Save Changes when done
Shopify dns settings
If you want to redirect your current domain name to your Shopify store, you can set up a 301 redirect. To do this, follow the steps below:
1. Log in to your GoDaddy account and select “Domains” from the menu on the left side of the page.
2. Click on “Manage” next to the domain name you want to edit or transfer, then choose “Edit DNS” from the drop-down list. The Edit DNS page will appear with options for changing A records and CNAME records (among other things). Scroll down until you see an option labeled “A Records”.
3. Under A Records, enter each of your subdomains (if applicable) in their own line and add an IP address for each one. Then enter a single record for Shopify’s main domain (shopify.com) at the very bottom of this page so that it looks something like this:
How to redirect domain to Shopify
Shopify, like most other e-commerce platforms, doesn’t typically host your website. Instead, they give you a custom URL like http://www.yoursite.com that will redirect users to their servers. This is called a “301 redirect” and it’s standard practice for sites that don’t host their own content. However, if you have a domain name that’s not pointed at Shopify yet, you’ll need to point it somewhere else temporarily while you’re setting up your store.
Shopify recommends pointing your domain name at their nameservers (ns1.p38.dynect.net and ns2.p38.dynect.net) in order to establish ownership of the domain before pointing it at their servers:
In step 3 of the Shopify Setup Wizard, enter ns1.p38.dynect.net as the nameserver address for your domain:
Shopify is a platform that helps you launch, manage and grow your online store. All your products, orders, customers, and more are stored securely in the Shopify database.
Shopify integrates with Google Apps, so you can start selling right away with a professional custom store built to look great on any device. You can integrate Google Apps with Shopify using a subdomain or an email address.
Shopify is a great ecommerce platform for building your own online store. It’s easy to use, has a ton of features and best of all, it’s free! However, if you’re not interested in hosting your own store or don’t want the hassle of setting up your own server, there are many hosting companies that offer Shopify hosting as an add-on to their existing services.
Shopify also has their own DNS settings so you can set up your domain name to go directly to Shopify instead of having to use forwarding rules on your registrar (if you’re using one). To do this though, you’ll need to log into your Shopify account and add the new DNS records there.
Shopify has two types of DNS settings:
Shopify Domains: These are the domain names you use to access your store. They are managed by Shopify, and they cannot be transferred to another provider.
Shopify Subdomains: These are subdomains within your store, like “storefront,” “checkout,” etc. You can transfer these to another provider if you ever want to switch away from Shopify.
