SQL is a special-purpose programming language designed for managing data in relational database management systems (RDBMS). The acronym originally stood for Structured Query Language, but as of 2011 is now often used as an initialism for its full name, which is pronounced as separate letters.
SQL was devised in the early 1970s by IBM Corporation’s Edgar F. Codd, who had worked on IBM’s System/360 and System/370 series of computer systems. However, he did not invent SQL; rather he designed it as an improvement over existing query languages such as COBOL, PL/1 and FORTRAN.
Codd first described his new system in a paper published in 1970 titled “A Relational Model of Data for Large Shared Data Banks”. In this paper he introduced the concepts of base relations (tables) and domains (columns), which became part of the standard SQL model from ANSI X3.135-1989. He also proposed a new operator (SQLExecute), which would later become the SELECT statement.
In early development, SQL was called SEQUEL (Structured English Query Language). The name was changed to avoid confusion with other proposed database languages such as SEQUEL II (by IBM) and SQU.
