Steps to connect database to your ASP.NET web application:

1) Open Visual Studio and create a new project (File -> New -> Project).

2) Select Templates -> Visual C# -> Web -> ASP.NET Empty Web Application. You can also use MVC template if you want to create an MVC application. The name and location of the project is not important now, but make sure that you have chosen .NET Framework 4 as target framework for this project because we are using Entity Framework Code First approach in this article which is only supported by .NET 4 or above versions of Visual Studio.

3) Now right click on References folder under your Solution Explorer and select Add Reference… option from context menu as shown below:
