Ross Chapin was born on November 21st 1945 in New York City, New York. He grew up in an artistic family where both his mother and father were artists. At age 16 he began working as an apprentice carpenter at his father’s company where he learned how to build houses from scratch right down to the foundation!
He later went on to study architecture at Syracuse University where he graduated with honors and received his bachelor’s degree in 1970. After graduation Ross took some time off from school while he worked as an architect for various companies including Skidmore Owings Merrill from 1971-1974 and then Louis Kahn Architectural office from 1974-1975 before returning to Syracuse University again for graduate studies this time focusing on urban planning (specifically urban renewal)
