The World Trade Center was built on land that had been a part of lower Manhattan for more than 200 years. In 1609, Dutch colonial governor Peter Minuit purchased the island from Native Americans and named it “New Amsterdam.” After England took control of New Amsterdam in 1664, it gradually became known as New York City.
In 1726, city officials laid out streets and wharves along Manhattan’s southern tip that would become known as Battery Park City. In 1808, they opened Castle Clinton at this location as an entertainment venue for visitors arriving by boat at the port on Manhattan’s southern tip. Castle Clinton grew into a fortification named Fort Clinton during the War of 1812; however, it did not play a significant role in any military engagement during this conflict or its aftermath..
