I have been building fences for over 20 years and I have had people ask me how to build a gate on their wood fence. This is what I do.

The first thing that you need to do is figure out where the gate will go. My driveway gates are 8′ wide x 7′ tall. I usually make them flush with the top of my fence rails so there are no gaps for things like leaves or snow to get into my yard.

Once you have determined where the gate will go, cut your rails down to fit between your posts. This way when you install them they will be even all around. Make sure that when you cut them down that they are long enough so that when they are installed correctly they stick out 1/2″ past each post (this is different than most gates because most gates don’t use posts). Once they are cut down and painted (optional), install them between your posts making sure that they fit tightly together with no gaps between them and no gaps at either end of the post
