A storage shelf is one of the simplest DIY projects you can do. It’s also one of the most useful – it can be used to store anything in your home, from books and toys to clothes and shoes. And if you’re short on space, building a shelf is a great way to add some extra storage without taking up much more room.
The first thing you need to decide when building a shelf is what kind of material you want to use for its construction. The most common types are wood and metal, but you can also build shelves out of stone or concrete if you have access to those materials (and if they’re sturdy enough).
Wooden shelves are usually made from pine or other soft woods like cedar, which are easy to work with and inexpensive. If you’re going for an authentic look, try using reclaimed wood instead – old barn doors or floorboards are perfect for this purpose!
Metal shelves are typically made from galvanized steel tubing or aluminum tubing that has been cut into lengths and bent into shape using a tube bender tool (available at most hardware stores). Galvanizing protects the steel from rusting while maintaining its strength and durability

How to build a storage shelf from scratch:
The first thing you need to do is get the pallets. To do this, you can go to any store that sells real wood pallets and ask them if they have any extra ones. You can also find lots of people online who are selling brand new pallets at a low price.
Once you have your pallets, you will need some other materials for building your storage shelf. You can use nails or screws for attaching the planks together, or glue if you want it to be more permanent. You will also need wooden boards for making shelves and supports for attaching them to the wall.
Once you have all the materials, start by attaching one plank directly onto another plank using nails or screws (depending on what kind of material they are). Make sure they’re well-aligned so that they’re strong enough to hold weight evenly when filled with items. Repeat this process until you’ve built enough planks to cover the area where you want your storage shelf. Next, attach wooden boards on either side of each plank so that they form a frame around each section of planks (see image above). Finally, attach these frames together using nails or screws (if possible) so that
How to Build a Storage Shelf From Scratch
1. Measure the length and width of the pallet you purchased (or cut the wood you are using). Make sure to measure twice, cut once!
2. Decide where you want your shelf to be located, and mark the pallet with some chalk or a pencil on either side of where the shelf will be going.
3. Using a skill saw or circular saw, cut down through both sides of the pallet at your marks. Use a miter box if necessary to make sure your cuts are straight and square. You should now have two pieces of wood with 2 by 4 inch sides that are ready to be used for your shelf!

Here are the materials you will need:
1x 4×8′ sheet of plywood (cut into 2 equal pieces)
2x 4×4′ sheets of plywood (cut into 2 equal pieces)
1x 4×4′ sheet of 1/2″ plywood (cut into 2 equal pieces)
8-12 screws (1 1/4″)
4-6 screws (2″)
I’ve seen many different storage shelf designs for the home. My latest project is a little different. It’s a simple, clean design that is made from pallets.
The pallet wood has a distressed look, so it works well with the rustic decor of our home. I love how easy it was to put together and how inexpensive it was as well!
Here’s how I did it:
1) Measure your wall space and cut your pallets to fit accordingly. You can also use 2×4s or 2×6s if you’d like, but I really like the look of using the actual pallets themselves!
2) Using 1½” screws and 2″ screws (I used my drill), attach your boards together to form your shelf unit. Make sure that when you’re attaching them, you leave enough space so that they don’t touch together when they’re sitting against each other on the wall! The pallets will expand/contract slightly due to moisture levels in the air so leave yourself some breathing room between each board!
3) Once all boards are attached, flip over your unit onto sawhorses or another flat surface for assembly…
