Building a sluice box is very easy and takes only a few hours. It’s one of the first things I learned when I started panning for gold several years ago because it’s such an easy way to separate out the finer particles of gold from your concentrates.
Two pieces of plywood (8 feet long x 5 feet wide) – one piece will be cut into two pieces, while the other will remain whole. You can use any kind of plywood you want as long as it isn’t too soft or brittle (like balsa wood). The thicker the better!
2-3 pieces of 2×4 lumber (cut into lengths between 4 feet and 6 feet)

The idea behind a sluice box is that it has a series of riffles that the water runs through. The riffles act like teeth, catching any gold in them and allowing it to drop out when you pull the sluice up from under water.

The first step is cutting the two 2x4s down to 4 feet long. These will form the sides of the box. Next cut another 2×4 into two pieces that are each 2 feet long. These will be used for attaching the sluice box to rocks or stakes on either side of a stream or river. Finally, measure out two pieces of plywood that are 18 inches by 48 inches wide (or 3 feet by 1 ½ feet wide). You will use these as the bottom and top covers for your sluice box. I built my first sluice box out of an old couch, a couple of 2x4s and some PVC pipe. It worked great!
Mining for gold is not cheap. Even if you find it, you’ll have to pay to have it processed at a refinery and they will only give you a few dollars per ounce of gold. I found that building my own sluice box was much cheaper than buying one.
You can buy the parts for your homemade sluice box at any hardware store for about $80. Building it yourself will save you about $30 and allow you to customize it however you like.
To build your own sluice box:
Buy a 48-inch piece of 10-foot long 2×10 lumber (this will be the bottom frame). Also buy two 20-foot long 1×4 boards (these will be the sides). You may also need some other pieces of wood depending on how big or small you want your sluice box to be.
