You’ll need:
A pair of aluminium flat bars (5mm thick). I used 25x80mm bars, but you can use 30x30mm, or whatever size you prefer. The wider the bar, the more stable it will be when carrying bikes.
A pair of aluminium T-Track brackets (I found mine at Bunnings). These have holes in them so that they can be bolted onto the flat bar using screws. Make sure that your brackets have holes in them!
Cable ties. These are used to secure the T-Track brackets to the flat bars. Any type of cable tie will do, but try to get ones that are UV resistant if possible because they tend to break down faster when exposed to sunlight over time.
An angle grinder with metal cutting disc attached. This is used for cutting off excess material from around the edges of each piece of aluminium flat bar (we’ll see why later).

Here’s an easy way to make your own DIY roof rack cross bars.
These are the same cross bars that I used on my 2014 Honda Fit. They’re very strong and sturdy, yet lightweight and inexpensive to make. They’ll last for many years and can be used for multiple vehicles.
To get the dimensions for these DIY aluminium roof rack cross bars, you’ll need a tape measure or ruler, pencil or pen, and some paper (optional). You’ll also need a hacksaw or reciprocating saw with a metal cutting blade, masking tape or painters tape, a drill/driver with a metal drill bit (I use this one), a sharpie marker or felt tip pen, and possibly some sandpaper if you want to get rid of any rough edges after cutting the aluminum sheet metal. I also recommend wearing leather gloves while doing this project because it’s not too difficult but it can be dangerous if you accidentally cut yourself with a sharp object like the hacksaw blade!
If you need a roof rack for your car, but don’t want to spend a lot of money, making your own is a very smart idea. It’s not hard to make, and it will save you plenty of cash.
If you’re not sure where to start with making your own roof rack cross bars, here are some tips:
1) Measure the width of your vehicle first. You’ll need this measurement so that you know how wide each piece needs to be cut.
2) Use metal tubing to create the frame of the rack. This will allow it to support heavy items such as kayaks or bicycles and keep them from falling off while driving down the road. Cut pieces of tubing into short lengths and then use metal fasteners to connect them together in order to form a single long bar that runs across the width of your vehicle’s roof. Attach each end of this bar with metal brackets so that it securely attaches to both sides of your vehicle’s roof without moving around too much while driving down the road.
