After reading this tutorial, you’ll know how to make a raised panel door without a router, and you’ll be able to build one for your own home. This is a great project for any woodworker who’s looking for something new to try out.

The biggest advantage of using this method is that it allows you to make beautiful doors without having to buy any special equipment or tools. You can use just about any woodworking tool in your shop — from hand tools like chisels and planes to power tools like sanders, drills and routers.

To get started making your own raised panel doors, first find some suitable stock lumber at your local home center or lumberyard. Make sure that each piece has similar grain direction so that they will glue up well together. The easiest way to do this is by selecting boards that are all cut from the same tree trunk or sawn from the same board (see image above). If you’re building more than one set of doors, then you may want to consider buying extra stock so that you have enough material for each door set (lower right).

I built this raised panel cabinet door to match the kitchen cabinets in my house. It is made of two layers of plywood glued together, with a solid wood edge banding on the outside edges.

It’s not difficult to cut the panel shapes, but it is critical that they all line up perfectly. The easiest way to do this is with a router table and jig (or a commercial panel raising jig).

If you don’t have access to a router table, you can use an alternative method that I discovered while building this door.

This method works best if you’re making only one or two doors, but it does have some drawbacks compared to using a router table:

You can’t cut multiple panels at once. For example, if you want three panels for your door and each one is different widths and heights, then you would need three separate cuts on your table saw or band saw before assembly. If you have several doors to make at once, this might be too time consuming for you.
