There are other, more elaborate ways to get a yard gate, but they require a higher skillset. Here I will show you a basic and easy way to put up a gate using wire.
Garden gates aren’t particularly complicated; they are designed to keep family and pets in and other animals out. However, they do need some maintenance over time to stay in good working condition. One way to achieve this is to use wire to build your gates. Follow these simple steps to learn more.
How to build a garden gate with wire
A garden gate can be a simple and inexpensive addition to your yard. This project will show you how to build a basic wood gate and attach it to a welded wire fence.
Step 1: Cut the Wood Gates
Cut the 2-by-4s into four pieces measuring 2 feet long. These are the vertical posts that will support the gate. Cut two pieces of 1/2-inch plywood into strips measuring 3 inches wide by 3 feet long — these will be used for the base of the gate.
Step 2: Attach the Posts
Lay two posts on top of one another, with one end flush against the edge of a workbench or table. Clamp them together so they don’t move while you install screws through holes drilled into both boards. Screw through one side at a time; don’t over-tighten them because you’ll split the wood if you do!
Step 3: Install Hinges
Flip over your post assembly once all screws are in place, then add hinges by drilling holes for screws that match those used for attaching posts together (see Step 2). Flip back over again, then install nuts on each screw before tightening all screws securely in place

A garden gate is a great way to add style and beauty to your yard, but it can be hard to find the right design for your space. To build a garden gate, you will need some basic carpentry skills and materials.
Step 1: Measure and Cut the Wood
Measure and cut the wood into two pieces that are approximately 4 inches wide and 3 feet high. The measurements of these pieces will vary depending on the size of your gate; however, they should be large enough that they can fit over the top of your fence posts without touching them.
Use wood screws to attach each piece together so they form one large frame. Do not place any screws directly into the wood yet; instead, use small nails or brads to hold them together while you check their fit against your fence posts.
You will need:
Fence panels, either welded wire or chain link. The cheapest way to build a gate is to use fence panels with the posts attached. If you have the option, choose panels without posts.
Wooden boards. These are used to build the frame of the gate and attach it to the fence panels. You can use 2x4s or 4x4s for this purpose, depending on the size of your gate.
Wire cutters and pliers.
Hammer and nails (or screws). If you’re using a nail gun instead of a hammer, you won’t need these tools either!
Wire ties or cable ties (optional). These can be used to attach your gate to posts if they aren’t already attached to them.
For this project, we’re going to build a simple garden gate using a 2×4 frame and some scrap wood. We’ll also use some wire, but it’s not necessary.
Here’s how we did it:
1) Cut the 2x4s to length. We used two 24″ long pieces for each side of the gate and four 28″ long pieces for the top and bottom rails. You can use whatever length you like, but make sure that your framing is long enough to span at least 12 inches on either side of the opening in your fence. The wider your gate opening, the stronger it will be as well (just make sure you leave yourself enough room to open and close).
2) Attach the two shorter 2x4s together with right angle braces at either end of each piece (we used two braces per side). Make sure the braces line up with each other on both sides of your frame so that they form an L shape when viewed from above (see photo). This will help keep everything square while you’re attaching everything together later on.

How to build a simple garden gate
If you want to build a simple garden gate, the process can be done in a few hours. You’ll need some basic tools and materials, including:
• A piece of recycled wood or metal for the base. A wooden door frame or old pallets will work.
• Metal fence posts with caps on top. Make sure they are tall enough for your desired height of the gate.
• Wire fencing material that is wide enough for your desired width of the gate.
• Nails, screws and other hardware needed for attaching the wood to the post cap.
• Wire cutters or pliers (depending on if you’re working with wire fencing).

Cut the pieces of lumber to size. For the best results, make sure that all four pieces are exactly the same length. Then attach them together using 2-inch wood screws. The screws should penetrate through both sides of each piece of lumber and into each other at least 1 inch.
Saw off any extra wood from your gate frame so that it is about 1/4 inch thick. Use sandpaper or another abrasive tool to smooth out any rough edges on your gate frame.
Use hinges to attach one side of your gate to the fence posts on either side of the opening in your fence. Make sure that they are securely fastened before moving on to attaching the other side of the gate frame to those same fence posts.
