How to build a flowchart

Step 1: Start with a Blank Document

Start by opening a blank document in Word or PowerPoint. The size of the document doesn’t matter; however, you will want to make sure that it’s big enough to contain all of your ideas.

Step 2: Create Nodes for Each Step

Next, add nodes for each step in your process and connect them with lines. The node represents the first thing that needs to happen, for example “add contact.” The line connects this node with the next one on the list, which should be something like “send email.” You can also draw lines between two nodes if they’re related but don’t necessarily need to be done at the same time. For example, you may have two nodes labeled “get approval” and “call customer,” but these can be done at different times during the process so they don’t need to be connected directly with a line.

Step 3: Add Subnodes Where Necessary

If there are sub-steps involved in any of your steps, add them as subnodes under their respective parent nodes. For example, if one of your steps is “call customer,” then underneath that node create another one labeled “call customer
