Non-lethal weapons have been around for decades. Amongst historically popular methods, namely truncheon and mace, we can also find the crossbow. Many a time it is featured in movies, such as Braveheart or Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves. Unfortunately, it was not very common in those times because making one requires advanced carpentry skills, which were often hard to obtain. On the other hand, specialized tools, such as a drill press, were not that widespread either. Another more accessible variant of the crossbow is using popsicle sticks for its construction. This one is easy to create and you don’t need any complex machinery or tools to pull it off.
A crossbow is an ancient weapon and tool that is also relevant in modern times. The design of crossbows has evolved over centuries. The traditional materials used in the making of this weapon were long wooden stave, sinew, and animal glue.
How to build a crossbow
If you want to build your own crossbow, then you will need a way to bend the limbs of the bow. This process is called lamination, and it can be done with a special device called a press. If you don’t have access to one of these, then you can make one yourself.
The following steps will show you how to build one:
1) Cut two pieces of 2×6 lumber that are exactly 12 inches long. These will be used as supports for your press.

To build a crossbow, you will need the following items:
A hand drill or power drill
Wood glue
One 2x4x8′ piece of lumber for the stock and one 1x4x8′ piece for the foregrip
Two foot long pieces of 3/16″ steel rod (or 1/4″ diameter rod) for the bow arms. You need enough to make two bow arms so you can cut them at an angle. These pieces will be welded to the bottom of your stock after it is shaped.
One 3/4″ x 3/4″ x 3/8″ flat steel bar for the trigger mechanism. You’ll need enough so that once bent into shape, it will hold itself up against gravity while being pulled by the string.

How to build a crossbow press
First, cut two 5-inch lengths from each of the popsicle sticks. Then, use the hot glue gun to glue one length onto each end of two of the longer sticks. The dowel should be about 1 inch in diameter and 4 feet long; you can use a longer one if you want it to be taller than 4 feet.
Now take another popsicle stick and cut it into three pieces — two 5-inch lengths and one 3-inch piece. Glue those three pieces onto one end of your crossbow, with two pieces on either side of the 3-inch piece and the other piece at the center point between them (as pictured above).
Next, take another dowel that’s 1 inch in diameter and cut it down to size so that it fits snugly inside this third piece (try using a pencil as a guide). Then screw it into place with some screws or nails so that it stays put.
Finally, attach another 5-inch length of popsicle stick to the top end of your crossbow (as pictured above). This will act as your cocking mechanism —
