When we moved into our new house in December, I knew that I wanted to get some furniture from IKEA. As soon as we saw the KALLAX bookcase, we knew it was the perfect addition to our living room! The big problem is that living in a small house with two kids means that there are very few places to store things. The only real option for a bookcase was in our living room but we didn’t want it taking up valuable space there so we decided to make an insert for it instead. In the past I’ve used these inserts in my closet. They’re great because they fit on top of the Ikea Kallax shelves, and add a lot of storage space.

Here’s how:
1) Measure the width of the opening on each side of the KALLAX and cut 2 pieces of plywood (or MDF) to fit snugly inside. The width should be 1/4″ less than the measurement so that it fits snugly without falling in or out too easily. Sand down any rough edges with sandpaper so that no splinters will be poking out.
2) Cut 4 pieces of wood or MDF that measure 1″ shorter and cover them with contact paper (I used blue contact paper). These will act as spacers between the front panel and back panel of our drawer/box insert so that they won’t rub together when we slide them in and out of
