Stanford University

Stanford University is a private research university in Stanford, California. The institution comprises two undergraduate schools, four professional schools, and a graduate school of arts and sciences. Stanford’s academic strengths are its top-ranked engineering program, one of the best law schools in the country, and many programs at the graduate level.

The university was founded in 1885 by Leland Stanford Sr., who made his fortune as a railroad tycoon. He saw his new university as a place to educate “new creative men and women who will find their way to full development.” Today the school is still run by the descendants of Leland Stanford – including its president since 1993, John Hennessy – and still retains much of its original character.
