The cost to build floating shelves is really minimal. The most expensive part is your wood, but if you’re using reclaimed wood (which I recommend) or recycled wood, then the cost is even less. You’ll also need a few tools to get started:
A saw – circular saw or table saw. If you don’t have one already, they’re pretty cheap and can be used for other projects as well!
A drill – this comes in handy for attaching the brackets
Sandpaper – if you want to smooth out the edges of your boards before hanging them up on the wall, this will help a lot!
Nails – basic finishing nails work great for hanging things like this onto drywall (but don’t use them if you’re hanging onto brick or concrete!).
Cost to build floating shelves
I have a small kitchen and wanted to make it look bigger. I’m not a woodworker, so I found an article on how to make floating shelves. The article was very detailed and gave me all the information I needed to create my own. The total cost was under $200, which included materials and tools.
The first step is deciding what type of shelf you want: thin or thick (1/2″ or 1″). The thinner the shelf, the easier it is to install; however, if you’re going for aesthetics, then you may want to consider thicker shelves. In my case, I chose 1/2″ thick because it was easier for me to cut with jigsaw and drill through with my cordless drill.
I bought some pine boards from Home Depot that were already planed down for me at 1/2″ thickness. If you purchase unplaned boards from Home Depot or other lumber yards, then you have to plane them yourself at home using a hand planer or power planer before using them in your project. Pine boards are cheap ($8-$10 per board) since they’re not considered hardwood and don’t require as much work as hardwoods when being used as decorative accents in home design projects like this one
Floating shelves are usually made of wood and painted to match the walls. But you can also buy floating shelves that are made from metal and plastic.
Floating shelves are easy to install. If you have a stud finder and a level, then you can easily create your own floating shelves.
Here’s what you need to know about floating shelves:
You can make your own floating shelves by using a few basic tools like a tape measure, drill, screwdriver and hammer. You also need a saw to cut the wood into pieces.
If you already have some basic carpentry skills, then it will be easier for you to make your own floating shelf since it just takes some good measuring and cutting skills along with some basic carpentry skills. However, if you don’t know how to use tools or don’t have any carpentry experience, then it would be better if you hire someone else to do it for you as it may be dangerous for someone who doesn’t know how to use tools properly or doesn’t know how to cut wood straight enough without damaging the piece of furniture underneath where they’re working on at that moment in time when building their own floating
Floating shelves can be an easy and inexpensive way to add style and storage to your home. The shelves themselves are usually made of wood or metal, but the floating aspect comes from the fact that they have no brackets or other attachments to a wall or other surface. Instead, they sit on top of the wall, which allows them to look more like part of the decor than just a place to store items.
If you’re interested in making some floating shelves for your home, there are a few different ways to go about it. You can buy pre-made shelf kits from hardware stores or online retailers such as Amazon.com, but these often come with instructions that are hard for beginners to follow. If you want a more customized look and feel for your shelves, it’s better to build them yourself from scratch using wood or metal sheets and woodworking tools like saws and drills.
How to Build Floating Shelves
In a small room, every inch counts. But you can still add storage space by building a set of floating shelves. These wall-mounted units offer an attractive alternative to bulky cabinets and other furniture. They’re also easy to build.

Here’s how to make your own:
1. Make a plan for your floating shelves. Lay out the spacing between the shelves and the height of the top shelf before you begin building them. You’ll need at least 33 inches from the top of one shelf to the bottom of the next one, but it’s best if you allow more than that so that you can store larger items on each shelf (such as books). The distance between shelves depends on the size of your walls and how much space they can accommodate
In this video I show you how to make a floating shelf. The process is simple and the results are amazing.
I used some scrap wood and an old cabinet door, but you could use almost any type of wood you have lying around.
You will also need some basic tools for this project, including a saw and a drill/driver. If you don’t own these tools yet, you should consider getting them because they can be very useful for future projects.
The steps are pretty easy:
1) Cut your pieces of wood according to the sizes in the diagram above (the widths of the boards should be about 1″ less than the width of your cabinet door). You’ll also need to cut an additional piece that’s about 6″ wide by 4′ long (for mounting brackets). This piece will be used later on in step 3).
2) Drill two holes in each board (one near each end), which will allow us to attach them together later with screws. These holes should be drilled at least 1-1/2″ deep so that they go all the way through both boards!
