Amarillo is a city in the Texas Panhandle in the United States. As of 2010, the population was 198,160. Amarillo is the principal city of the Amarillo Metropolitan Statistical Area, which encompasses all of Potter and Randall counties. The 2010 census showed 160,605 residents in Potter County and 197,110 residents in Randall County. The metropolitan area had a population of 276,011 in 2000.
The economy of Amarillo is based on agriculture and transportation; however, Amarillo has diversified its economic base to include technology, manufacturing and health care. The railroad has been important to the local economy since the 1880s. In 1881 the Missouri-Kansas-Texas Railroad (MKT) built through Amarillo on its way from Kansas City to El Paso. By 1885 over 1,000 people lived in Amarillo and there were five trains daily with passengers traveling westward across Indian Territory to New Mexico Territory or eastward into Texas.
In 1887 an electric interurban line between Amarillo and Canyon opened as an MKT subsidiary named “Texas Traction Company”. This line was extended to Clovis by 1901 and into New Mexico by 1907 where it met another interurban system that ran from Roswell through Carlsbad to Hobbs.
