How to Build A Boat Cabin Door
1. Measure the opening for the new door. This should be done with a tape measure, but if you are replacing an old door, make sure it matches the size of the hole left by removing the old one.
2. Cut two pieces of 1×6 lumber so they are each 6 inches wide and long enough to fit between the stanchions on either side of the opening in your boat’s hull (start with 12 inches). These will be used as spacers between your replacement door and its frame (the frame will rest on top of these). Also cut two more pieces that are 4 inches wide and long enough to fit between those spacers on their sides (start with 8 inches). These will be attached to each other at 90 degrees so they form an “L” shape (see diagram below).

Replacing a cabin door on a boat is not a difficult project. The most common type of marine door is the sliding door, which consists of two or more panels that are fitted into tracks and slide open and closed. Replacing a sliding door requires removing the old door, cleaning out the track and reinstalling the new one.
Step 1: Remove the Old Door
Remove any screws or bolts holding down the old door. If there are no screws or bolts, pull up on the bottom of the door until it slides out of its tracks. You may need to remove some screws or other hardware first if they are blocking your way.
Step 2: Clean Out Track
Clean out any dirt from inside the track with a vacuum cleaner attachment or fine-bristled brush to prevent dirt from getting into your new cabin doors when you slide them along their tracks. If your boat has only one cabin door, then there will be no tracks for you to clean out! Skip this step if there is no track behind your old cabin door.
Step 3: Install New Door
Set all new pieces together before installing them into place so you can make sure everything fits properly into place before permanently attaching anything together with screws or adhesive strips (if provided).
After installing the hinges, you’ll want to hang the door. For most boat doors, you’ll need to mount a hinge on each side of the door and then use a latch to hold it in place. The latch should be mounted on the inside of the cabin.
