Average cost to replace a roof with shingles

Let’s face it, we all worry about our roofs. They protect us from the elements and we need to know that they’re working properly. We have heard the horror stories of people getting caught out by a wooden roof cave-in or an entire blacktop roof flying off in a strong wind. I have a house built in the 50’s and the roof is made of cedar shingles. Recently, several of them have blown off and I am looking at replacing them with another type of shingle.

I have been quoted $6,000 to replace with cedar shingles, which seems high to me. The roof is only 4 years old and looks good but I don’t know how much life is left in it.

My next idea was metal roofing which would be cheaper but not as attractive in my opinion.

I am trying to get an idea of what I should expect for cost before I decide on what type of material to use for my roof replacement….

The cost of a new roof can vary greatly depending on the size of your home and the type of roofing materials you choose. In general, you can expect to pay about $3 to $4 per square foot for quality roofing materials and labor. If you are replacing a flat roof, it may be less expensive than a traditional shingle roof because there are fewer layers of material needed.

If you’re looking to replace your roof because it has been damaged by wind, hail or other natural disasters, there may be additional expenses that aren’t included in our estimate above.

These include:

Determining if the structure is sound

Repairing any damage caused by the storm

Removing debris from the site
