The tractors must have four wheels and be at least half-ton rated (500 pounds). The wheels can be any size, but they must be mounted on a steel axle with no independent suspension or leaf springs between the wheels and frame. The maximum length of the vehicle is 8 feet, 6 inches (2.59 meters). There are no maximum width or height restrictions.

There are two classes — “Super Stock” and “Stock”. Tractor pulling started as an offshoot of tractor races and truck pulls. It was first held at the North Central Iowa Fairgrounds in Boone, Iowa on July 19, 1955 by Paul Schilke who had been racing tractors from 1948 through 1952. The rules were simple: two drivers would line up at opposite ends of a straight track, each attempting to pull the other’s tractor over a chalk line. The first driver whose tractor crossed the line won.

Since then, many different types of tractors have been used in competitions around the world including garden tractors, utility tractors and industrial tractors. Some drivers use modified tractors with larger engines or other modifications that make them faster on the track; these are called Modifieds or Modified Stock Tractors (MST). Modifieds are often set up to run on diesel fuel instead of gasoline so they can compete at events that don’t allow gas powered vehicles (such as horse pulling).

In some competitions there are also trophy classes where only one driver can win first place; this
