The most common question we hear from people who want to start a magazine is “How much does it cost?” This is a difficult question to answer because there are so many variables that affect the cost of starting a magazine. The biggest one is the number of pages, which will determine how much it costs to print and ship. But there are other factors as well:

Some magazines are printed on newsprint and some on paper that’s heavier than newsprint, which makes a difference in the cost per page.

Some magazines are printed on uncoated paper, while others use gloss or matte coated paper.

Some magazines use only black ink on white paper (black and white), while others use four colors — cyan (blue), magenta (red), yellow and black — plus black ink on white paper. Others use four colors plus metallic silver ink on white paper, but this is expensive because it requires special presses that can print four colors at once (quad-rich press), as well as special plates for each color used in the job.

Here are the steps you should take if you want to launch a magazine:

1) Write out your business plan

2) Find advertisers

3) Set up your website/social media accounts

4) Find freelancers or hire staff writers

5) Write and design your first issue

1. Who are you and what do you do?

I’m a freelance writer and editor, living in San Francisco. My first book, The Art of Money, is coming out this spring. I’ve published articles for the New York Times, Salon and other places. My second book is about starting a magazine — it’s called The Magazine Startup. It will be published in April 2019 by Chronicle Books.

2. What inspired this project?

I was inspired by the success of my first book, which sold over 100,000 copies worldwide. I wanted to take that experience and apply it to something bigger than myself — something that could positively impact people’s lives on a larger scale than just one person at a time!

3. What are your goals for this project?

My goal is to reach as many people as possible with my message about money management and personal finance. I want to help them understand how money works so they can make better decisions with their money and have more financial security in their lives
