SteamCMD is a command-line version of the Steam client. Its primary use is to install and update dedicated servers.

To download SteamCMD, visit https://steamcdn-a.akamaihd.net/client/installer/steamcmd_osx64.tar.gz and download the file. Extract the contents of that .tar file to your desktop or another folder on your hard drive. You should see a folder called “steamcmd” with files inside it after you extract the file. You can delete this extracted folder once you’ve copied over all of its contents to your server directory later in this tutorial.

Next, open up Terminal (found in Applications > Utilities on Mac) and type this command to move into the directory containing steamcmd: cd ~/Downloads/steamcmd . Then type ./steamcmd +login username password followed by +force_install_dir ./valheim_ded_server . The command above should look like this:

cd ~/Downloads/steamcmd

./steamcmd +login username password +force_install_dir ./valheim_ded_server

How to Setup Your Own Dedicated Server

Install SteamCMD on Windows:

1. Download the latest version of SteamCMD here – http://media.steampowered.com/installer/steamcmd_linux.tar.gz

2. Unpack it and change into the directory – tar xvfz steamcmd_linux.tar.gz && mv steamcmd linux32

3. Run ./steamcmd.sh from within that directory – ./steamcmd.sh +login anonymous +force_install_dir ./csgo +app_update 740 validate +exit

4. You can then exit this shell (it’s not needed in future sessions), or you can leave it running if you want to install more games at once!
