In 1963, General Motors President Ed Cole asked his design chief Bill Mitchell to develop a new personal luxury car to compete with Ford Motor Company’s Thunderbird and Continental Mark III models.[1][2] Introduced in January 1964 at that year’s New York World’s Fair,[3] it was designed by Mitchell,[4] who would later be known as one of the “fathers” of the Corvette Sting Ray.[5][6]
