How to build a jacob’s ladder
Jacob’s ladders are simple to make using rope and either wooden dowels or wooden skewers. They can be any height, but they must be at least twice as tall as the distance between the two supports. This is because the rope will sag down in the middle, so you need to account for that when making it. The dowels or skewers should also be long enough to reach from one support to another, and then an extra foot or so beyond that. Cut them about five feet long if possible. Two nails, screws or other small pieces of metal that can be hammered into wood
A piece of wood with a hole in it (like the top of a crate)
A hammer or mallet (optional)
Start by tying one end of the rope around one nail. Then tie the other end around another nail. If you’re using string instead of rope, tie each end around one nail and then tie them together in the middle. Now you’ve got two vertical lines of rope/string. Place your crate on top of these lines so that they go through both holes in your crate. If you want to make sure it doesn’t move around while you’re working on it, place some heavy books on top as well. Now take one end of your line and start pulling it through one hole until both ends are coming out of the same hole again at the bottom side of the crate (or wherever you decide to put them).
