Building a small porch can seem like a daunting task, especially if the user has no previous experience building anything. The trick to building a porch is not buying into the idea that it’s hard to do. There are plenty of resources available to help anyone take on the project and achieve success.
How to build a roof for a porch
A gable roof is a traditional style and is one of the easiest to build. This type of roof has two sides that slope down toward the middle and meet at an apex, or peak. The roof ends are called gables, and they can be covered in shingles or another material.
Build a small porch roof using these steps:
1. Start by building the rafters by cutting 2 x 4s into pieces that are as long as you want your rafters to be long and wide enough to fit between the support posts. The rafters need to be square so that they will fit together properly when they are installed on top of each other. Use a circular saw with a blade attachment for ease of use; if you don’t have one, buy one or rent one from your local home improvement store.
2. Nail each piece together so that it becomes one piece and then nail it onto the end of one of your support posts with four nails on each side of the rafter so that it is secure when you put it up later on in this project process that we’re going through right now here today with this tutorial video for how to build a small porch roof so please stay tuned in right here on this channel for more videos like this one

How to Build a Small Porch Roof

4x4s – 10′ long
Hips – 2x12s at 16′ long
Soffit – 1″ x 12″ x 12′ long 1/2″ plywood sheets
Rafters – 2x8s at 8′ long (or 2x10s if desired)

Step 1: Cut rafters
Cut two 5-foot 2x4s into eight 18-inch pieces. These will be your rafters, which will support the weight of the roof. Cut two more 2x4s into four 36-inch pieces. These will support the front and back walls of your porch.
Step 2: Assemble rafters
Attach two rafters together with a 2-inch by 4-inch piece of wood between them using three 1/2-inch screws per joint (Photo 1). Repeat with remaining four pieces of wood to form one set of two rafters combined together at each joint with a single piece in between them for support (Photo 2). Set aside this first set of two rafters so that you can use it as a template when making additional sets for your porch roof project.

How to Build a Gable Porch Roof
A gable porch roof is one of the simplest roofs to build. The main components of a gable porch include:
Two rafters or trusses. The rafters or trusses are the beams that run from each gable end to the ridge board.
Ridge board. The ridge board is the horizontal board that runs down the center of your roof, connecting the two rafters at the top of your structure.
Valley boards. Valley boards are used to cover the gap between two rafters when they meet at an angle in a valley between two sloping surfaces (such as hip and valley). They help prevent water from leaking into your attic by covering small gaps in your roof.
Gable ends. Gable ends are those vertical walls at either side of your house that form your gabled roofline, which often has windows and doors in them.
You can build a gable roof on a small porch in just a day, using common materials. The project is made easier by using pre-cut plywood and gable trusses.
Step 1: Cut the rafters for the gable roof. You’ll need to cut two rafters for each side of your gable roof, so make sure you have enough wood to accomplish this task. Use a circular saw to cut the 2x4s into rafters. You should end up with eight pieces of 2×4 that are 12 feet long and two pieces that are 6 feet long (for the front and back).
Step 2: Attach the front and back walls to the floor joists with 3-inch screws. Make sure you have your level handy so that you can keep both walls straight as you attach them to the floor joists below them.
Step 3: Attach the top plates to each side of the house with nails or screws when they’re parallel with the ground outside of your foundation. Then use them as guides while nailing in place all other framing members that will connect one side of your house to another – namely, studs and headers, which are 2x4s

1.Measure the size of the existing porch and make sure the dimensions will accommodate the new roofing material.
2.Purchase lumber, plywood and other supplies needed for construction from a local hardware store or lumber yard.
3.Make sure all tools are sharpened before starting construction on any project. This will help ensure that everything goes smoothly once you’ve started working on this project in particular. You also want to make sure all equipment is clean so there aren’t any splinters or other problems that could cause injury while working with sharp tools like saws, drills and knives. Make sure all nails have been removed from materials before starting construction as well, so they don’t get stuck in somebody’s foot while walking through the area where work is being done or sitting on anything that might contain nails sticking out of them like a bench seat or chair
When building a gable roof, you will need to cut the rafters at an angle. This can be done in many ways and there are many different tools for doing this, but I like using my circular saw with a guide attached. The guide is made from a scrap piece of wood with a hole drilled in it to fit the blade of my circular saw.
The first step is to mark where the rafter should be cut. You do this by measuring from the top of the wall all the way down to your desired length (or depth) of your gable roof. Then you mark where each rafter should be cut on both sides of your house. The easiest way to do this is with chalk lines so that when you cut them all out at once, they will all be exactly alike!
Once you have marked where each rafter should be cut, you need to actually make those cuts! For me, this was by far the most difficult part of building my gable porch roof. I had never used a circular saw before so I wasn’t sure what angle would work best when making these cuts with my guide attached… and I ended up cutting several pieces before finally getting one right!

Build the Gable Roof Frame
1) Start by cutting four 2x4s at 86 inches long. These are the rafters that will support the front and back of your gable roof. Cut another four 2x4s at 82 inches long for the end rafters. You’ll also need to cut two 4x4x10 posts for each side of your porch roof (one per side). You’ll need to cut these down so that they’re about 6 feet tall (see Resources for plans).
2) Lay out your rafters on top of 2×6 joists that are spaced 16 inches apart from each other. Use deck screws to secure them in place with their tops flush against the joists. This will create a solid base for your porch roof frame.
