How to Build a Stone Foundation for a Shed
A stone foundation can be used to support your shed’s floor. A stone foundation is sturdy and durable, however, it will take some time and effort to build. The first step in building the foundation is to clear the area where you want to place your shed. Then dig down at least 3 feet below ground level so that the bottom of your shed is below ground level. Next, lay out the concrete piers for your stone foundation. Place them about 4-foot apart with their centers on the sides of your shed where you plan on putting joists (support beams). Fill each pier with concrete until it reaches ground level so that there are no gaps between each pier or between the piers and ground level. After this has set, pour concrete into the space between each pier on top of what was poured before so that they’re completely filled with concrete. Once this has set up enough that it won’t crack when you place pressure on it (usually an hour or two), pour additional concrete into any gaps between piers and then let this dry for several days before proceeding with construction of the shed itself

I’m not sure what kind of stones you’re talking about, but if they’re just regular fieldstones, then you should be able to get them from your local quarry or rock supplier (if you’ve got one). You might also be able to get them from an old building site somewhere nearby (if there was ever one), but I really wouldn’t recommend using any old rocks just because they’re free; make sure you know what kind of rock you’re dealing with first (like limestone vs granite, etc.).
In this video, I show you how to build a stone foundation for your shed. This is a great project that allows you to use what you have on hand and still make something very nice.
The first thing that I did was construct the shed frame out of 2x4s. This will act as the base for my stone foundation. You can see in the picture below that I used 3/4″ plywood for the flooring.
I then cut some 2x4s down to size and attached them together with carriage bolts and nuts. This created my actual “frame” of the shed.
