How to build a roof for deck
You can build a roof over your deck with ease. It’s not as difficult as you might think, and it will be an attractive addition to your home.
Here are some tips on how to build a shed roof over your deck:
-Decide how large you want the deck roof to be. Measure the length and width of the deck, then decide if you want it to cover just part of the deck or all of it. If you only want part of it covered, measure that area separately and add those measurements together with the full-deck measurements.
-Determine if you want to add a roof support post in the middle of the structure. If so, where should it go? The best place is near one corner, but this may not be possible because there may not be enough room for it there or because there might not be enough room for attaching more than one piece of lumber to support it properly. You may have to place it at another location along one side or even in the center of the structure if that’s possible without compromising its stability too much.
-Use pressure-treated lumber for all parts of this project because it lasts longer than untreated lumber does and resists rot better than other types do once installed outdoors
The roof over a deck is an ideal place to add storage space for your garden tools, bikes or patio furniture. You can also use the roof for a greenhouse or a simple place to enjoy your morning coffee. The steps below will show you how to build a shed roof over a deck.
Step 1 – Choose the Deck Location
The first step in building this type of roof is to choose where you want it to go on your deck. Make sure that it’s in an area where there is enough room for the entire structure and that it won’t block any doors or windows.
Step 2 – Digging the Footings
Once you’ve decided where you want your shed roof, dig holes around each post that will support it. The depth of these holes depends on how far down into the ground you want your posts to go, but usually they should be no less than 12 inches (30 centimeters) deep. You may also need to add gravel or concrete around each hole before backfilling with dirt so that water doesn’t collect around them when it rains.
If you’ve got a deck and want to add a shed roof over it, here’s how to do it.
The first step is to build the support posts for the shed roof. To do that, you’ll need to install two 2-by-6s at each end of your deck. These will serve as the top rafters for your shed roof.
Next, cut one piece of 2-by-6 lumber into three equal lengths (8 feet) and attach them to the front and back of each support post using metal post cap connectors or lag bolts with washers and nuts.
Use another length of 2-by-6 as an angle bracket against one side of each support post cap and screw it in place with 3″ deck screws. The bracket should be flush with one end of the post cap so that it doesn’t interfere with attaching the roofing plywood sheets later on. (Tip: If you’re working alone, use a scrap piece of scaffolding board to help hold up this long piece while you screw it into place.)
Now use two more pieces of 2-by-6 lumber and attach them as rafters between each pair of support posts using metal post cap connectors or lag bolts with washers and nuts again.
I’m planning to build a shed roof over a deck. The deck is about 12 feet wide and 40 feet long. I’m going to put it up on posts that are 2x4s spaced about 3 feet apart.
I was planning on using 2x6s for the rafters and then using 2x4s for the purlins. The purlins will be attached to the top of the posts with Simpson H3 Truss Head Screws (2-1/2″ x 3-1/2″). My question is, how do I attach the bottom ends of each side of my shed roof to the posts?
The other question is, do I need rafter ties? If so, where do I put them?

Once you’ve completed your deck, it’s time to build a roof. The first step is to cut the rafters to length and then nail them into place on top of the beam. Next, build a gable box out of 2x4s, attaching it to the underside of the rafters with screws. Nail plywood sheets to both sides of the gable box, using 1/2″ plywood or OSB (oriented strand board).
Once you’ve got your roof structure finished, add some support posts at each corner of the deck and secure them in place with concrete footings. Then install a fascia board around the perimeter of your deck and attach it with nails or screws. Finally, cover your new structure with asphalt shingles or other materials that can withstand winter weather conditions.
How to Attach Deck Roof Support Posts
Building a shed roof over a deck can be a rewarding project. However, it is not as simple as just bolting the support posts to the deck. You must use metal straps at each post to ensure that the roof does not move or warp when you attach the rafters. These straps are also necessary if you live in an area where there are high winds or earthquakes.
Using Metal Straps
The first step in attaching metal straps is determining where they should go on your deck. If your deck is made of wood, it will need about four straps between each support post that connects to the house. These straps provide extra reinforcement for the connections between your home and the deck. If your deck uses concrete piers instead of wood posts, you should only use three straps between each pier and house support bracket. This reduces stress on these connections and helps prevent cracks from forming over time.
After you determine where each strap needs to go on your deck, measure 2 inches from either side of each post so that it will be easy to drill holes into them later on when installing your new shed roofing system. Mark these spots onto each post using a pencil so that they are easy to see later on after all of

Lay the deck roof support posts on top of the deck framing and mark the post locations on the deck framing. The deck roof support posts must be level with respect to each other. Use a 4-foot level to check the posts for level before attaching them to the deck framing.
Step 2
Use a drill/driver to drive 3-inch deck screws through the top edge of each support post and into adjoining joists or beams. Drive screws at least 1 inch away from any exposed edges of the support posts, so that you don’t drill into them accidentally when installing flashing or other materials later on. Mark each hole location with a pencil before drilling so that you don’t drill too deep and possibly damage wood surrounding each screw hole.
Step 3
Secure all four corner posts by driving screws down through their tops into adjoining joists or beams on one side of each post, then turn it over and drive screws down through their tops into adjoining joists or beams on the opposite side of each post so that no two screws are directly across from one another. This will help prevent twisting forces from causing damage during high winds or other extreme weather conditions (see Reference 2).
Attach the deck roof support posts to the deck frame and to each other. Use 2-by-4s for the span of your roof, and install them with 10d galvanized nails every 16 inches.
When you’re attaching the roof support posts to each other, make sure the tops of the posts are level with one another. The top of a 2-by-4 is usually about 1½ inches higher than its bottom edge; if you need to adjust it, use a straightedge and a hammer to tap down any high spots.
You don’t have to do this step right away (as long as you have enough room). You can always come back later if you need more space or if you decide that you want to adjust your design.
Attaching a roof to your deck can help you create a more comfortable living area, but it does require some special considerations. Here’s how to build a shed roof over a deck.
1. Make sure the wood is treated. Untreated wood will rot quickly in the rain and snow, which can lead to leaks and water damage. If you’re building a shed roof over an existing deck, make sure the wood is treated or you’ll have to replace it with treated lumber after construction.
2. Install support posts at intervals of 16 feet along the perimeter of the deck. The size of these posts will depend on how far apart they’re spaced; use 4x4s if they’re 16 feet apart or 6x6s if they’re 24 feet apart (or even larger if your deck is really long).
3. Cut rafters from 2x4s using a table saw or circular saw (you’ll need at least four for each side). You should install one rafter per post, so mark off each post where you want them installed before cutting any rafters — you may want two rafters above every other post for extra support and strength.

Attaching a shed roof over a deck is an easy and inexpensive way to increase the usable space of your deck. The structure can be as simple as a framed box with rafters, or it can be more complex, like a gable roof.
The most important thing is that the materials are strong enough to support the weight of the roof. You may want to add additional support posts under the outer edge of the deck if you have more than one layer of material.
