How to build a outside cat house
This is the first article in a series of how to build a house for cats outside. The following are the steps that I took to build my first house for my cats. I hope you enjoy them and maybe even use them as a guide for your project.
Materials:
2x4s for framing (I used 6)
1/2″ plywood for walls (I used 4 sheets)
1x12x8′ pressure treated decking for flooring (I used 1 sheet)
Screened window and door (I used 1 window, 1 door)
Door latch and lock (optional, but something you should have)
Cats are very independent creatures that can be left alone for long periods of time. This is especially true when you have an outdoor cat. Cats prefer to stay outside, but if you live in a colder climate, there may come a time when you need to keep them indoors. That is where outdoor cat houses come in handy.
How to Build an Insulated Outdoor Cat House
Building an insulated outdoor cat house is not as difficult as it sounds. You just need the right materials and some time on your hands. Here are some things you should know before building your own insulated outdoor cat house:
What type of material should I use?
The most common material used for making outdoor cat houses are cedar shingles or plywood sheets. Cedar shingles are more expensive than plywood sheets, but they last longer and do not absorb moisture like plywood sheets do. If you plan on using plywood sheets, make sure they are treated with waterproof sealers before using them to build your outdoor cat house
How to build an outdoor cat house:
Building a well-constructed outdoor cat house is not difficult, but it does require some basic carpentry skills and some time to complete. The first step is to decide what type of cat house you want to build. Do you want a simple box structure or something with doors, windows or shingles?
The simplest type of outdoor cat house is a wooden box with a door cut into one side. You can make this type of cat shelter from scrap wood or buy it at your local home improvement store. If you use scrap wood, be sure that it’s treated so that it won’t rot. It’s also important that your cat shelter be insulated so that the inside stays dry and warm in winter and cool in summer.
If you want more than just a basic box, there are many other options available. You can add windows and doors, install insulation in between walls and flooring and even attach shingles on top of your structure if you like the look of them
If you have a cat that spends time outside, then you know how important it is to keep them warm, safe and dry. A cat house is a great way to provide shelter for your outdoor cat during the winter months.
The best way to build an outdoor cat house is to use materials that will keep your feline friend warm in the winter and cool in the summer. You can use wood or plastic, depending on what is available at your local hardware store or home center.
The cat house pictured here was made using 6-foot 2x4s and 1-inch Styrofoam insulation panels. If you are going to make the same type of structure, remember that you need two pieces of wood per panel (one underneath and one on top). The Styrofoam panels must be cut down so they fit inside the frame of the house.
Measure up from each corner of the bottom piece of wood (or Styrofoam) and mark where you want your cuts to be made. Using a handsaw or circular saw cut out each corner leaving about 3 inches of material remaining on all sides of each corner (see photo). This makes it easier for your cat to climb up onto the structure because there are no sharp edges sticking up at
Building an outdoor cat house is not as hard as you might think. You can build a simple and inexpensive outdoor cat house using lumber and plywood. You will need the following materials:
Materials:
1 sheet of plywood or other material that is at least 2 inches thick
1 or 2 sheets of insulation material (the thicker the better)
2x4s to make the frame for your cat house (you can use smaller material if you want but 2x4s are recommended)
Nails and screws for attaching the frame together
Tools:
Hammer or screwdriver

In this tutorial I will show you how to build an insulated outdoor cat house. The house is made out of cedar and is insulated with foam board insulation.
It is heated with a 250 watt heater that runs on a thermostat. The heater is controlled by a remote control and a timer.
The outside walls are made out of 3/4 inch plywood and the inside walls are made out of 1/2 inch plywood. The roof is made out of 1×6 boards that are 12 inches wide. The floor is made out of 2×6 boards that are 12 inches wide and 48 inches long.
The front door is hinged on one side so it swings open and closed for easy access for your cat(s). There are also two openings in the top for ventilation purposes (one on each side). How to Build an Insulated Outdoor Cat House
Building a cat house is a great way to give your furry friend a warm place to sleep, especially in the winter. The process can be quick and easy if you have the right materials and tools.
Step 1: Choose Your Materials
The first step is choosing the right materials. You will need 1 sheet of plywood, some nails and screws, insulation foam and a hammer drill. You can use cedar or pine for the exterior walls, but it’s best to use treated pine for the flooring. Cedar is more expensive than pine, but it will last longer.
Step 2: Cut Out Pieces
Cut out all pieces according to your measurements, including one door and one window opening per side. It’s best if you make them slightly smaller than needed so that you can trim them down once all sides are assembled. Use an electric saw for this part of the process because it’s faster than using hand tools or power tools with small bits such as drills or jigsaws.
Step 3: Drill Holes For Nails & Screws
Drill holes in each piece of wood at least every 12 inches apart along the edges where they will meet during assembly so that there won’t be any gaps between walls

Building a cat house is not difficult. You can make one yourself with just a few simple tools and the right materials. It is important that you use good quality materials in order to ensure that your cat has a safe place to stay outdoors in winter.
1. Choose your location carefully
Choose a location that has shade and protection from the wind. If possible, try to find an area where there are some trees or bushes that will provide shade during the day and cover at night. Choose an area that is protected from rain as well as snow so that your cat will have shelter even when it rains or snows outside.
2. Build the frame first
Build the frame of your cat house using 2x4s (or whatever size boards you prefer) that are long enough to fit around all four sides of the box you want to build for the cat house. Make sure that each piece of wood is cut at an angle so that it will fit together easily when it’s time to put everything together.
