Our first step was to build a wooden frame around the garden bed so we could attach our new stone wall to it later on. We used pressure-treated lumber because it resists rot better than standard pine boards do. We also installed ledger boards on either side of our new garden bed so we could attach them together later on (see photo below).
Next we installed 2x6s along each edge of our new garden bed so we could attach wood siding later on (see photo below). This will provide us with an easy way to clean up any excess mortar from around our new stone wall if it ever gets messy.
