When you are putting up a fence, it is important to build it right. In order to do that, you need to know how to build a field fence stretcher. While there are a number of ways of doing this, the following is one of the most important steps to take when doing so.
The purpose of a field fence is to keep animals (wild and domesticated) from entering or exiting a part of your land. From a purely practical standpoint a field fence is different from a regular fence only in terms of its height — it must not be too tall so that an animal can jump over it, and not too short so that an animal cannot squeeze under it.
How to build a field fence
A field fence stretcher is a useful tool you can use to stretch barbed wire. Use the stretcher to stretch your fence to the right length, then secure it with staples or staple-holders.
A field fence corner is a piece of diamond-shaped metal that fits over the end of a post and helps hold the wire securely in place.
The steps below show how to build both types of fence stretchers:
Step 1: Mark the post where you want to install the stretcher. To make sure your marks are spaced evenly, measure up from the ground and mark every 6 inches with a ruler or tape measure.
Step 2: Drill three holes for each side of your stretcher using an electric drill and 3/16-inch drill bit. The holes should be spaced 8 inches apart and centered along each side as shown in Figure A (below). Make sure each hole is 3/4 inch deep so that when you hammer in your nails, they’ll go all the way through both sides of your stretcher piece without hitting solid wood on one side or sticking out at an angle on top of your post when you’re done hammering them in (see Figure B). How to build a field fence stretcher
1. Use the plumb bob to mark the post hole locations.
2. Dig holes and insert posts.
3. Place the bottom rail flat on top of a post and drive in the lag screws or spikes through the holes in the rail and into the post. Drive them in until they are tight against each other, but don’t over-tighten them because this may split the rail. When using spikes, be sure that they are driven straight into the wood — if not, they will pull out easily when you try to drive them in all the way.
4. Slide up another rail behind this one and repeat step 3 until all rails are installed between posts (Photo 1).

A post driver or hammer (for driving fence posts)
A post hole digger (for digging holes for your posts)
Posts (the number of which will depend on the length of your fence)
Fence wire (two rolls are recommended)
String (one roll should be plenty)
Building a field fence is a great way to add value to your property. A field fence can be constructed using various materials, including wood, metal and vinyl. While the installation process for each material varies slightly, all three types of fences require similar steps to install.
Step 1: Dig Holes for Posts
Dig holes for each post using a post hole digger. The depth of the hole should be half the height of the post, plus 3 inches. For example, if you are installing posts that are 6 feet tall, dig holes that are 3 feet deep.
Step 2: Place Posts Into Holes
Place each post into its corresponding hole until it stands upright on its own. Use stakes and boards to hold up posts if they do not stand upright on their own. Check that all posts are level by placing a level on top of them while they are still in the ground. Adjust as necessary by digging out dirt from around the base of each post until they are level with one another and with the ground surface around them.
Field fencing is a type of fencing used for agricultural purposes. It usually consists of a single strand of wire, or one wire with an electrified wire in front. Field fences are usually made of steel, galvanized steel, aluminum or plastic.
Field fences are constructed using wooden posts and metal brackets to hold the wires in place. These brackets can also be used to attach additional electrical wires to provide electricity for lighting or other uses. The posts should be spaced at least 10 feet apart and anchored firmly into the ground with concrete or rebar rods. Use a level to ensure that all posts are perfectly vertical before anchoring them into the ground.

The following instructions will help you build a field fence corner. The process is similar to building a field fence stretcher, but there are some minor differences.
First, you must dig two holes, one for the post and one for the brace. The brace hole should be about 6 inches deep with a diameter of 4 inches. The post hole should be about 12 inches deep with a diameter of 6 inches. Fill both holes with concrete and allow it to dry completely before moving on to the next step.
Next, hammer the cap plate tightly onto one end of the 8-foot piece of pipe. Attach your corner post to this cap plate by driving it into one side of your post hole until it fits snugly against the bottom of the hole; then hammer another cap plate onto this end of the 8-foot pipe (leaving about 2 inches exposed at the top). Drive your brace into its corresponding hole until it fits snugly against its bottom; then hammer another cap plate onto this end (leaving about 2 inches exposed at the top).

A field fence stretcher is a tool used to attach wire to a post. Standard field fence corners are made by cutting two pieces of wire and bending them into a “U” shape. The wires are then wrapped around the post and secured with staples or nails. You can also use screws to secure your corner if you do not have access to a staple gun or hammer.
The first step in building a field fence corner is to cut two pieces of wire that are each 4 feet long. The second step is to secure these two pieces of wire together by wrapping them around one another at least three times with pliers or some other tool. The third step is wrapping this newly formed bundle around the post at least three times, securing it with staples or nails as needed.
A field fence stretcher is a device used to place wire in a field fence. It has two wheels, one of which is mounted on a post that can be adjusted up and down. The other wheel is mounted on a post that can be moved from side to side.
The first step in building a field fence stretcher is to build the post for the rear wheel. Cut it to about 4 feet long and nail it onto an existing fence post (or into the ground).
Next, attach the rear axle to the rear of the stretcher (you may have to drill holes in it first). Make sure that it fits snugly so that when you turn it with your hand, there isn’t any wobbling or movement.

If you are going to make a field fence stretcher, it is important that you take the time to plan out all of the steps that you will need to take. If you do not plan ahead, then you may find yourself spending more time than necessary, and possibly even making mistakes along the way.
Step 1 – Pick out the Right Material
When building a stretcher, you need to pick out the right material. There are many different types of wood that can be used for this type of project, but one of the most common types is pine. Pine is very affordable, which makes it an ideal choice for people who are just starting out with woodworking projects like these. It also has a nice grain pattern that will allow you to create intricate designs on your stretcher if desired.
If you want to use other types of wood instead of pine or if you are looking for something with a little more strength or durability than pine has to offer, then there are plenty of other options available as well. You could use oak or birch instead if those materials suit your needs better than pine does.
Step 2 – Prepare Your Wood
Once you have picked out the right material and prepared it by cutting it down into smaller pieces that fit together nicely
This is a simple way to build field corners using 4x4s, 2x4s and cedar planks. The corner is made up of two 4x4s and two 2x4s. Cut the 4x4s to length so they will slide under the bottom rail of your existing fence. Cut the 2x4s so they will fit between the tops of your existing fence posts and the top rail.
Attach the 4 x 4’s first by driving them into the ground with a sledgehammer or post pounder until about 6 inches remain above ground level. Attach one 2 x 4 on each side of the 4 x 4 so that it is flush with the top rail of your existing fence. Attach another 2 x 4 on each side of this first piece so that it is flush with the top rail as well. Place cedar planks over these pieces and nail them into place every foot or so with galvanized nails (or other long lasting material).
