Cedar Strips and Lumber
There are several ways to build a cedar strip canoe. In general, the method you choose will depend on how much time you can devote to the project and how much money you want to spend.
If you want to save money, you can use rough-sawn lumber instead of planing it yourself. Rough-sawn lumber is less expensive than planed lumber because it requires less work. The downside is that rough-sawn lumber tends to be more difficult to work with because it has more knots and checks than planed boards. You may also find it difficult to find rough-sawn cedar strips at your local home improvement store or lumberyard; some places only stock finished products like 2x4s and 4x4s (2″ x 4″ or 4″ x 4″). If possible, try getting rough-sawn cedar from a specialty wood supplier like Woodcraft or Rockler instead of from your local hardware chain store.
14 Cedar Strips
14 cedar strips are used to build the canoe. The 14 cedar strips include two main pieces and two side pieces. The main pieces are the bottom, which is constructed of five strips laid end to end, and the sides, which are also made up of five strips laid end to end but with one end cut at an angle. The two side pieces are identical but mirror images of each other. The center strip is not used in this project and can be discarded or saved for future projects.
The instructions below will show you how to cut your strips using a jig saw, miter saw or table saw (with crosscut sled). The jig saw is probably best suited for beginners because of its ease of use and ability to make quick cuts without moving the material itself (if you’re using a table saw, you’ll need to make sure that your fence is properly aligned before making any cuts).
You’ll also need a drill with a 1/8″ drill bit (or similar), clamps, sandpaper and paintbrushes if you plan on painting the finished product.
