The cost to build Biltmore Estate is estimated at $60 million dollars in 1895. The estate covers 8,000 acres and has 250 rooms. It took over 1,000 workers to build the home and its surrounding buildings.

The house itself was designed by Richard Morris Hunt, who also designed houses for William Vanderbilt, J.P. Morgan, Henry Clay Frick and other notable families of the time period.

The house is constructed largely of stone from nearby quarries in North Carolina and Georgia. The stone was then transported via railroad to Biltmore Estate where it was cut into blocks and assembled into walls.

Biltmore Estate consists of five floors with a total floor space of 165,000 square feet (15,300 m2). The first two floors include the main entrance hall and library as well as dining rooms, kitchens and other service facilities. The third floor includes guest rooms while the fourth floor contains servants’ quarters and storage space for seasonal clothing. The construction of Biltmore House cost $4 million when it was completed in 1895. That would be approximately $113 million today using inflation rates from the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS). However, there are no records for how much money was spent on building materials at that time so we can only estimate what it would cost today to build Biltmore Estate based on current costs of materials and labor on similar projects.

The most expensive part of building Biltmore Estate would be the stone work because it is so expensive to quarry stone out of the ground and then transport it to Asheville where the house is located (about 150 miles north).
